Park Police Officer Washington, US Shooting: Shot and Hospitalized After D.C. Shooting Incident

A U.S. Park Police officer was critically injured in a targeted shooting on Monday evening in Southeast Washington, D.C., authorities confirmed. The incident took place just after 7:30 p.m. in the 5100 block of Drake Place SE, in the Marshall Heights neighborhood.

The officer, who was driving an unmarked white Tesla at the time, was struck by gunfire in the upper body. Despite the severity of his injuries, the officer managed to drive several blocks before being airlifted to a local hospital. At the hospital, he remains in serious condition, though police have stated that his injuries are not considered life-threatening, and he is expected to survive.

U.S. Park Police Chief Scott Brecht told reporters that at least two gunmen opened fire on the officer, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle during the attack. Authorities have not yet made any arrests in connection with the shooting. Police are actively working to determine the motive behind the attack and whether the suspects knew they were targeting a law enforcement officer.

The shooting occurred in a neighborhood that has long struggled with issues of gun violence, and the area has seen multiple incidents of crime over the years. Investigators are looking into whether the shooting was part of a broader criminal operation or if the officer was specifically targeted because of his role in law enforcement.

Local and federal officials have expressed their support for the officer and law enforcement. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi shared on social media that she had been in contact with Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel E. Bowser and Interim Police Chief Jeffrey W. Carroll. Bondi asked the public to keep the injured officer in their prayers as he recovers from his injuries.

Mayor Bowser also tweeted a message of support, emphasizing that while the officer’s condition remains serious, his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. She expressed gratitude to law enforcement officers and first responders for their swift actions in the aftermath of the shooting.

While Chief Carroll noted that there is some indication that the shooters may have known they were targeting a police officer, investigators have not yet confirmed whether the suspects had any connection to an ongoing investigation. Authorities continue to follow leads as the case develops.
