La Plata Man Charged in Deadly Shot: Victim Found in Charlotte Hall Yard

LA PLATA, Md. — Authorities have released new details in a deadly shooting that occurred Sunday night, March 22, 2026, leading to the arrest of a La Plata man now facing multiple murder charges.

The La Plata Police Department responded to a distressing situation on Sunday night when they were flagged down around 10:25 p.m. near La Plata Road and Radio Station Road by two individuals who reported a shooting inside a vehicle. According to a statement released on March 23, 2026, the shooting took place after a heated argument inside the car, which ultimately led to the tragic death of Bradrick Michael Wells, a 27-year-old man from Waldorf.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the driver, identified as Dayton James Webber, 27, from La Plata, allegedly shot and killed Wells, who was seated in the front passenger seat. Webber then pulled the car over near Radio Station Road and Llano Drive, where he asked the two witnesses, who were seated in the back seat, to help him remove Wells from the vehicle. The witnesses, horrified by the situation, refused and fled the scene on foot. Webber then reportedly drove away with Wells still inside the vehicle.

Emergency responders were dispatched at approximately 10:40 p.m., after a 911 call reported that a man had been shot in the head while inside a vehicle. Investigators later confirmed that the caller, the suspect, and the victim were all inside the vehicle at the time of the shooting.

The authorities quickly identified Webber as the primary suspect in the case. Webber, who is described as a quadriplegic white male, reportedly used his 2022 Tesla to flee the scene. After his departure, investigators began tracking his movements using cell phone and vehicle data, assisted by law enforcement agencies from across Charles County and neighboring King George and Spotsylvania counties in Virginia.

Webber had posted videos and images of the vehicle earlier in the day on social media from St. Mary’s County, which helped authorities in narrowing down the timeline of events. Nearly two hours after the shooting, a Charlotte Hall resident in the 10000 block of Newport Church Road called 911 to report a body in a yard. Officers arrived at the scene and located Wells’ body, which was later confirmed to have been abandoned and left behind. Wells was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators confirmed that the body was found approximately 9.9 miles from the location of the shooting, marking a devastating and senseless crime that unfolded over a short period. Authorities soon obtained an arrest warrant for Webber, who had driven to Charlottesville, Virginia, in the hours after the shooting.

While seeking treatment for a medical issue at a local hospital, Webber was taken into custody by the Albemarle County Police Department. He was charged as a fugitive from justice and is currently awaiting extradition back to Charles County, Maryland. Upon his return, Webber will face multiple serious charges, including first-degree murder, second-degree murder, and additional related offenses.

Officials confirmed that all individuals involved in the incident were known to each other, and there is currently no ongoing threat to the public. The investigation continues as authorities gather further evidence to fully understand the events leading up to the tragic shooting.

As of now, a mugshot of Webber has not yet been released, and the case remains under active investigation. Law enforcement officials are continuing to search for more details to bring closure to this devastating event.
