The Jacksonville community mourns the tragic loss of Rescue Engineer Colton R. Tibbetts, 23, who died in a single-vehicle crash during the early morning hours of March 25, 2026. His passing has deeply affected family, friends, and colleagues in the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department (JFRD).
Colton joined JFRD as part of Recruit Class 322 on July 8, 2022, quickly earning recognition for his dedication, professionalism, and commitment to public safety. On November 1, 2025, he was promoted to rescue engineer, a role that reflected his technical skill as well as his leadership and teamwork. Throughout his career, Colton displayed courage, a strong work ethic, and a genuine passion for service that inspired those around him.
A lifelong connection to firefighting ran in his family. Colton was the son of recently retired Lt. Brian Tibbetts and Jody Tibbetts, growing up in a household devoted to public service. This tradition shaped Colton’s own commitment to helping others, which he carried with pride and honor. Colleagues remember him as dependable, hardworking, and spirited, whose optimism and dedication uplifted the team and the community he served.
